STARTING OFF WITH A BANG-BANG
New Yearâs Day had been solemn. Gretchen had, naturally, imbibed far too much and was sleeping it off. Sylvia even looked a bit green as she stood in the kitchen after breakfast, making a list of the inventory in the cupboards. âWeâre going to need a lot of groceries,â she observed solemnly, and I nodded.
âGet in whatever you need. Weâre done partying for a while, though.â
âI appreciate you backing my society up, but I have to say Iâm a little glad weâre settling back to normal overall.â
I nodded and pushed through the swinging door to the dining room. âYou and me, both.â
The Ryders were leaving, and I helped them check out. Theyâd been very quiet during their stay, contributing nothing more about their personal lives after theyâd talked about their daughter. âIâm sorry youâre not staying longer,â I said politely as Dave made out a check.
âOh, we are, too,â Susan responded, âbut frankly, is it always this traumatic around here?â
I knew she was referring to Carolâs death. âOh, no, weâre normally quite boring.â
Dave shook my hand, and they left. I looked to the west and saw more dark clouds coming our way. âMore snow,â I said aloud.
Sylvia had come in behind me. âYouâre like a little kid all year waiting for Christmas, and when itâs done, you turn positively depressed.â
âI know.â I sighed. âItâs the idea of getting up on that roof and taking down all those lights.â
âDonât blame you. You need a man around the house.â
That was when it occurred to me. âOh, I canât believe this, that I forgot to tell you, but look.â I held out my hand, and she promptly dropped her mouth open.
âPeter?â
I nodded proudly. âHe asked me last night.â
She hugged me and then stood back, a shadow crossing her face. I read it perfectly.
âDonât worry. Nothing will change around here. Heâs moving in with me, and things will go on as normal.â
Her shoulders slumped in relief. âIâm sorryâ¦I just thoughtâ¦â
âAnd not let my children have their grandma?â
I got a second hug, and then she left, whistling.
